Shonen Knife - Adventure

Shonen Knife - Adventure

Japanese cult pop punk trio Shonen Knife celebrate their 35th Anniversary this year with a brand new album Adventure (out on 1 April via Damnably). They will be hitting the road for their most extensive UK and Eire tour in April, which includes a slot at the Stewart Lee curated All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival.

Formed in Osaka by guitarist and chief songwriter Naoko in 1981, Japan’s Shonen Knife rose from humble DIY beginnings crafting their own idiosyncratic songs, and fashioning their own brightly coloured outfits, to sharing a stage with Nirvana on their Nevermind tour, trailblazing a path for women in music and inspiring legions of bands.

For this, their 19th album, original drummer Atsuko returns to play bass, joining Naoko (vocals + guitar) and relative newcomer Risa on drums, whilst some bass parts were provided by regular member Ritsuko (who is on maternity leave) and Naru, from "Mummy The Peepshow". This is the first 5 Knife member album.

Shonen Knife - Free Time

Shonen Knife - Free Time

Photo: Russell Fenton - https://www.facebook.com/ShonenKnifeOfficial
What about this new album then?
‘Free Time’ is the 15th studio album from Shonen Knife, released in
the UK/EUROPE on DAMNABLY on CD/Digital Download.
Who are Shonen Knife?
The ground‐breaking all‐female Japanese, pop‐punk trio formed in
Osaka in 1981, when Naoko first heard late ‘70’s punk‐pop,
particularly The Ramones. Inspired, the band crafted their own
idiosyncratic songs, fashioned brightly coloured outfits and DIY
albums. In 1985, K Records released ‘Burning Farm’ in the US. Deals
with Sub Pop and various Majors followed. They toured with Nirvana
(on the ‘Nevermind’ tour), The Breeders and as part of Lollapalooza.
They recorded sessions for John Peel and appeared on MTV’s ‘Beavis
and Butthead.’ In 2010 the band played ATP, and toured the UK,
Europe, North America, China & Taiwan.
What do you need to know about this record?
Partly inspired by the band’s first UK Tour in 16 years, their new longplayer
was produced by Naoko and her manager Atsushi, and
recorded and mastered by Koichi Hara (Afrirampo/ ooioo/
Boredoms). This is the last SK album to feature 'super drummer'
Etsuko, who left the band after 6 years in 2010. This UK and Europe
version includes two bonus tracks: Rock'n 'Rock (Japanese Punk
version) and Capybara (Techno version). These were mastered by
Matthew Barnhart (sound engineer to The New Year, Midlake, The
New Pornographers, Superchunk and Silkworm).
What does it sound like?
‘Free Time’ follows on from the Classic Metal‐inspired 'Super Group'
album (2010). In places ‘Free Time’ pushes on to achieve a harder,
more muscular sound, like Motorhead covering a Dead Kennedy's
song. But that's not all ‐ the album has its quota of sugary‐pop‐punk
and even a techno track. With all three Knifes singing super‐high
harmonies, ‘Free Time’ could be J‐punk’s very own Wall of Sound.
Rock'n'Roll Cake!
Shonen Knife take on Bakunin & Kropotkin in Perfect Freedom and
question Anarchism and the concept of true freedom. Later, a
pissed‐off Naoko screams, “Where’s the missing money?” in
Economic Crisis. Do You happen to know? is a retro‐pop song about
Naoko's guitar, which disappeared at Heathrow after their ‘09 tour.
The happy life of a rodent – the South American Capybara ‐ gets a
tribute which for all the world sounds like a Fall song. No Shonen
Knife album is complete without a food based pop song and
Rock'n'Roll Cake is about as tasty as they come. A slice of dreamy
distorto‐pop filled with creamy fuzz and oozing images like:
“rolled cake, I want to sleep in it ‐ rolled cake, like hibernation‐ rolled
cake, I can have funny dreams ‐ yummy yummy rolled cake please.”
P.Y.O. is a playful delight of pop simplicity, inspired when the band
visited a pick your own farm in Sussex: “Cranberry, Strawberry,
Blueberry, Blackberry, Gooseberry, Coffeeberry, Raspberry, Chuck
Berry”. Perfect for Sesame Street or Yo Gabba Gabba. Love Song:
Ironically a song about disliking sentimental love songs that ends up a
non‐cheesey Pixies 'Velouria' ‐style love song itself. 30 years on
Shonen Knife rock harder, faster, funner and dress way fabber than
many of the hotly tipped young Turks of 2011. Ageism just met its
match and finally someone in music kicked crisis ass . As Naoko
says: “2011 is our 30th Anniversary‐Let’s ROCK!”
“When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a
hysterical nine‐year‐old girl at a Beatles concert.” Kurt Cobain
Recent Press
NME: “Osaka, Japan’s beloved Shonen Knife have now been churning
out mini pop‐punk masterpieces for bang on 30 years – not that
you’d be able to guess from the youthful pep of ‘Free Time’. The
heroic ladies sound just as fresh and enchantingly boisterous as they
ever have,” (7/10)
Uncut: “rocks like Motorhead designed by Hanna‐Barbara” (3/5)
BBC Music: “ The Osaka Ramones, you must concede, still have it.”
The Sunday Times: “…irrepressible slice of bounce‐along indie‐pop.
Beguiling.” Stewart Lee
Voted the winner of BBC 6Music’s ‘Rebel Playlist’ by a landslide
vote of 88%, which granted the single a play on every daytime
6Music show for a week plus album of the day on BBC 6Music
LondonPaper: “Part Shangri‐La’s, part Ramones, you can’t resist the
charm of lyrics … so give in, and don’t.”
Time Out London: “Punchy Pop‐Rock”
Artrocker: “Shonen Knife are brilliant”
Japan Times: “Shonen Knife are one of the most important bands in
history, even if the world at large doesn’t know it”
Subba‐cultcha: “brilliantly bonkers”

Shonen Knife - Osaka Ramones

Shonen Knife - Osaka Ramones

Shonen Knife - Blitzkrieg Bop. 4 . Nov . 2011@The Bottom of the Hill

Shonen Knife celebrate their 30th Anniversary by paying tribute to
their "biggest musical inspirations," The Ramones! The album
features 13 Ramones classics, performed by the band as “Osaka
Ramones” and released in conjunction with their 30th Anniversary
tour. Out in Europe on Damnably Records.
What do you need to know about this record?
"Osaka Ramones" is not only the name of this tribute album, but is
also the name of the side project which has made its way in and out
of Shonen Knife's performing history for decades. This East meets
West punk rock combination is now captured in an album recorded
and mixed between Osaka, JP and New York over the last year and
was co‐produced by Robby Takac of the American rock band Goo Goo Dolls.
Who are Shonen Knife?
“When I finally got to see them live, I was transformed into a
hysterical nine‐year‐old girl at a Beatles concert.” Kurt Cobain
Osaka, Japan’s Shonen Knife formed in 1981, when Naoko first heard
The Ramones. Inspired, the band crafted their own idiosyncratic
songs, fashioned brightly coloured outfits and DIY albums. In 1985, K
Records released ‘Burning Farm’ in the US. Deals with Sub Pop and
various Majors followed. 1989 saw the crème of the alt. rock scene
(including Sonic Youth, L7 and Redd Kross) covering their favourite
Shonen Knife songs on the tribute album ‘Every Band Has A Shonen
Knife Who Loves Them’, toured with Nirvana, The Breeders and as
part of Lollapalooza. They recorded sessions for John Peel and
appeared on MTV’s ‘Beavis and Butthead’. In 2010 the band played
Matt Groening’s curated ATP, and toured the UK, Europe, North
America, China & Taiwan. 2011 marks the band’s 30th year since its
inception (featuring Naoko's sister Atsuko and their friend,
bassist/vocalist Michie) to their current lineup featuring members
Ritsuko (b,v) and Emi (dr,v), SK have maintained their rightful place in
the ever changing indie rock scene.
Naoko, Shonen Knife on “The Ramones”:
"Ramones were my all‐time idols since I first heard their music from a
radio and rushed to a record shop. This year is the 30th anniversary of
Shonen Knife. For celebration, we decided to record a cover album of
our favorite band the Ramones. The title is "Osaka Ramones" with our
respect. I'm very happy to release an Osaka Ramones project and to
recognize their contribution to the evolution of Shonen Knife."

Shonen Knife - Pop Tune

Shonen Knife - Pop Tune

Shonen Knife - Psychedelic Life

‘Pop Tune’ is the 18th studio album from Shonen Knife, released
in the UK/EUROPE by DAMNABLY on CD/Digital Download.
What do you need to know about this record?
This new long-player features ten original songs produced by
Naoko and manager Atsushi, recorded by Ippei Suda
(Afrirampo/Balzac) and mastered by Koichi Hara (Afrirampo/
OOIOO/Boredoms). The UK and European release features
special ‘orange’ coloured artwork by up and coming illustrator Mami Saito.
What does it sound like?
Having explored a 70's heavy metal rock sound in their previous
two LP’s Super Group and Free Time, Pop Tune is a return to
the bands signature combinations of pin sharp punk-pop, 60’s
girl group inspired harmonies, upbeat melodies and irreverence.
Pop Tune is a celebration and paean to pop, catchy hooks, key
changes, simple, fast, short and altogether jubilant songs.
‘Osaka Rock City’, has been selected as the theme song for the
movie adaptation of Robin Shio’s “Soul Train Flower” directed
by Hiroshi Nishio and out in cinemas in Japan later this year!
This album is also the first recording to feature all members of
the band’s current lineup. Lead vocalist and guitarist Naoko as
chief songwriter, delivers her characteristic charmingly
unaffected view of the world through her carefree lyrics, and
with bassist Ritsuko taking lead vocals on “Sunshine”, and
drummer Emi taking lead vocals on “Psychadelic Life”, this
could well be their first full band masterpiece yet!

During the early-'90s alternative wave, quirky Japanese indie rock trio Shonen Knife made major fans out of alt-rock's elite (Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and Redd Kross, among others) and built a solid worldwide cult following with their Ramones-meets-Beatles brand of sticky-sweet punk-pop. Following their early-'80s rise as indie upstarts, they signed to the majors for the release of 1992's breakthrough Let's Knife. With vocalist Naoko Yamano at the core, four albums were issued with the founding trio, before the first of many lineup shuffles. The band's early-2000s output included 2003's Candy Rock and 2005's Genki Shock! Cementing their veteran status in the 2010s, Yamano kept the band going, their endearing charm and no-nonsense punk bursts packing efforts such as 2011's Osaka Ramones and 20th album, 2016's Adventure.

Formed by Michie Nakatani (vocals, bass), Naoko Yamano (vocals, guitar), and Atsuko Yamano (drums), Shonen Knife started in December 1981 in their hometown of Osaka, Japan, where all three members were working as office clerks. The band played its first real show in March of the following year. Soon after, they began issuing albums in Japan, including 1982's cassette-only release Minna Tanoshiku (English translation: Everybody Happy?), 1983's Burning Farm, 1984's Yama No Attchan, and 1986's Pretty Little Baka Guy (the latter of which was reissued with extra tracks four years later, under the title Pretty Little Baka Guy/Live in Japan). Although their records were only available in the U.S. via import, Shonen Knife struck a chord with the underground with a track that appeared on the Sub Pop 100 compilation in 1986. In 1989, a collection of alternative bands even recorded renditions of their favorite Shonen Knife songs for the tribute album Every Band Has a Shonen Knife Who Loves Them.

The first Shonen Knife release to be issued outside of Japan was a 1990 self-titled compilation that featured the entire Burning Farm and Yama No Attchan albums, as well as three tracks that were only previously available on the obscure Japanese comp Aura Music. Shortly thereafter, the group began touring America on a somewhat regular basis, supporting its 1991 release 712 with some dates opening for Nirvana just prior to the runaway success of Cobain and company's now-classic Nevermind album. Now the hip band to name-drop, Shonen Knife signed their first major U.S. recording contract with Capitol, resulting in the release of one of their finest (and best-known) albums, 1992's Let's Knife. A year later, the group switched to the Virgin label, issuing Rock Animals, which would spawn a semi-popular MTV video with "Tomato Head" (even landing a spot on the network's popular animated series Beavis & Butthead).

In 1994 the trio performed as part of the traveling alternative rock festival Lollapalooza and contributed a cover of "Top of the World" to the Carpenters tribute album If I Were a Carpenter, while Virgin issued an 18-track collection of rare tracks, Birds & the B-Sides, in 1996. Although they were able to greatly expand their U.S. fan base, Shonen Knife never obtained the breakthrough success that was expected by many, resulting in the group returning to the independents and issuing such further releases as 1997's Brand New Knife, 1998's Happy Hour, and the 2000 Japan-only release Strawberry Sound (which featured the band's revamped lineup of Atsuko Yamano on bass and Mana Nishiura, who joined Shonen Knife after Nakatani left in 1999, on drums).

Vocalist Naoko Yamano was the only original member during the mid- to late 2000s, but even after 20-plus years and difficulties maintaining a consistent lineup, the band showed no signs of slowing. In 2005, Oglio reissued the band's first four albums, and the band released Genki Shock in Japan; late that year, Nishiura was killed in a New Jersey traffic accident while touring with DMBQ. Both Shonen Knife and DMBQ performed at a tribute concert for Nishiura that was held in Kyoto in spring 2006, shortly before the U.S. release of Genki Shock. The band continued on with drummer Etsuko Nakanishi and bassist Ritsuko Taneda, releasing a live album and another full-length, Super Group, in 2009. A few months after completing 2010's Free Time, drummer Nakanishi parted ways with the band, to be replaced by Emi Morimoto. After celebrating their 30th anniversary with a concert in New York, the Yamano/Taneda/Morimoto lineup released Pop Tune in 2012 and Overdrive in 2014.

The year 2015 saw more lineup changes for Shonen Knife. In March, founding drummer Atsuko rejoined the band on bass, a reunion that was supposed to be a temporary gig while Ritsuko was away on maternity leave. However, Ritsuko did not return and Atsuko continued with the band. Months later, Morimoto announced her departure and was replaced by Risa Kawano (Brinky). In April 2016, the year of their 35th anniversary, Kawano and the Yamano sisters returned with Shonen Knife's 19th studio album, the '70s rock-inspired Adventure, which featured the single "Jump Into the New World." The following year they delivered the compilation Ready! Set!! Go!!!, a special collection released in conjunction with their tour of Australia. In 2018, the band celebrated their comeback success with ALIVE! in Osaka, a live collection culled from their lengthy list of punk confections. ~ Greg Prato & Neil Z. Yeung, Rovi

Yeung, Rovi

Shonen Knife - Dizzy

Shonen Knife - Dizzy

From the album "Sweet Candy Power" to be released June 6th, 2019 on Good Charamel Records in Europe and North America and P Vine Records in Japan.

Shonen Knife - Burning Farm Album

Shonen Knife - Burning Farm Album

Burning Farm is the first album by Shonen Knife. It is almost entirely in Japanese, with only "Twist Barbie" on the original release in English. The Japanese 8" vinyl (Zero Records 0-0783) had eight songs. The CD re-issue bonus tracks "Parrot Polynesia", "Watchin' Girl" and "Banana Fish" first appeared on the Zero Records compilation LP Aura Music in November 1983. The other CD bonus songs are either "Watchin' Girl" and "Twist Barbie" live (Oglio Records), or "Ukkari Hachibei" and a cover of The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated" (MCA Records, Japan). The album's cover was painted by bass guitarist Michie Nakatani. There are at least two pressings of the 8 inch record, with different labels and back covers. One back is black with a live photo, the other is yellow with a posed group photo. Both pressings misspell the third track as "Twist Barbie". K Records released, in small quantities, Burning Farm on audiocassette in the United States with a different cover and track listing. In 1993, Kurt Cobain listed it in his top fifty albums of all time.

Shonen Knife - Jump into the New World

Shonen Knife - Jump into the New World
Shonen Knife, “Jump into the New World”. The legendary retro-futurists have returned with a lean and meteor-kissed new song, propelled by humor, charm and history. The track is taken from Adventure, their new and 19th album, already out in Japan but set for release in the rest of the world on April 1st. You can find all the relevant ordering information for it, which varies according to where you live, here. Via The Line of Best Fit.

Song & lyrics written by Naoko

Lyrics:

Jump into the new world
Try to keep on, yeh yeh
No need to worry, just take it easy, oh yeh

Jump into the new world
Feel a bright light, yeh yeh
With a happy song in your heart

Open the window of your mind
You can feel a bracing wind
If you feel alone, remember the song
You only get one life

Jump into the new world
Don’t be afraid, yeh yeh
Even now, it’s not too late
Jump into the new world
Challenge yourself, yeh yeh
With a happy song in your heart
