Japanese Breakfast - For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)

Japanese Breakfast - For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women)

After a decade making the most of improvised recording spaces set in warehouses, trailers and lofts, Japanese Breakfast’s fourth album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), marks the band’s first proper studio release. Produced by Grammy Award winner Blake Mills, the record sees front-woman and songwriter Michelle Zauner pull back from the bright extroversion that defined its predecessor Jubilee to examine the darker waves that roil within, the moody, fecund field of melancholy, long held to be the psychic state of poets on the verge of inspiration. The result is an artistic statement of purpose: a mature, intricate, contemplative work that conjures the romantic thrill of a gothic novel.

For Melancholy Brunettes follows a transformative period in Zauner’s life during which her 2x GRAMMY nominated breakthrough album Jubilee and her bestselling memoir Crying In H Mart catapulted her into the cultural mainstream, delivering on her deepest artistic ambitions. Reflecting on that success, Zauner came to appreciate the irony of desire, which so often commingles bliss and doom. “I felt seduced by getting what I always wanted,” she says. “I was flying too close to the sun, and I realized if I kept going I was going to die.”

The plight of Icarus and other such condemned ones lends For Melancholy Brunettes its most persistent theme, the perils of desire. Like light dispersed, its spectral parts take the album’s characters through cycles of temptation, transgression and retribution. On “Orlando in Love” — a riff on John Cheever’s riff on Orlando Innamorato, an unfinished epic made up of 68 ½ cantos by the Renaissance poet Matteo Maria Boiardo — the hero is a well meaning poet who parks his Winnebago by the sea and falls victim to a siren’s call, his 69th canto (even in the lofty realm of classical myth Zauner has a soft spot for innuendo). “Honey Water” plumbs the quiet rage of a woman married to an unfaithful man, watching him cede again and again to lust like a base insect perpetuating its own demise.

Sadness is indeed the dominant emotional key of this record, but it is sadness of a rarified form: the pensive, prescient sadness of melancholy, in which the recognition of life’s essentially tragic character occurs with sensitivity to its fleeting beauty. Zauner finds space enough inside it for glimmers of hope. They are the consolations of mortals that poets before her have called out to and that poets after will continue to rediscover: love and labor, and though they run like tonic resolutions through the record’s many episodes, they sound most saliently on its final song, “Magic Mountain,” an engagement with Thomas Mann’s famous novel of the same name. For her, making any work feels like scaling a mountain, but from the perch of For Melancholy Brunettes, she surveys the future.

T a F F Y - lull

T a F F Y - lull

Japanese indie-pop favourites taffy return with their sixth studio album ‘Lull’ on the 24th January via Club AC30. ‘Lull’ marks the band’s first release since the critically acclaimed 2019 album ‘Deep Dark Creep Love’.
‘Lull’ marks the first material from the band with new guitarist Rio Kato, who brings his own unique, inimitable style to the taffy sound. “He’s great at playing almost any style we choose, yet he has his own approach which turned out perfectly throughout the album. We have the usual taffy gems along with Rio’s style, so it’s taffy but kind of new taffy! I feel that this album is sensitive but quietly powerful,” says vocalist and guitarist Iris. The new album is the result of the coronavirus pandemic back in 2020. “During covid, we sadly lost some great artists and I myself have lost few of my loved ones. Not being able to meet in person for a long period of time, it felt as though it would go on forever. It made me realise who and what really matters to me. All those mixed emotions and feelings went into each and every one of the songs on the album,” she adds.

On the band’s first new material in six years, Iris continues, “I’ve missed the people, places, things, bands, shows, tours, just every little thing that we used to do and have, but at the same time I’ve also felt that everything and everyone was changing and what kept me going through those tough times were the people who showed love to taffy, so I really wanted to deliver the album as in a way of my appreciation.”

From the sweet, beguiling sounds of album title track ‘lull’ and jangly rhythms of ‘ifonly’, to the mesmeric rumblings of dream pop anthem ‘Colour Me’, taffy display a finely-tuned sense for melody. Elsewhere, the impossibly sweet vocals of lead singer Iris glide effortlessly on the charming ‘Prism 45’ before taffy offer an ethereal mixture of distorted guitars, feedback and volume on a tender
cover of R.E.M.’s ‘Hairshirt’.

Forming in 2011, taffy has built a glowing reputation in Japan and the UK within the shoegaze genre pioneered by bands including Ride, Lush, and Slowdive, and has been able to incorporate those influences into their own unique sound, gaining numerous plaudits along the way including The Guardian, NME, Clash and Dork and can count The Charlatan’s Tim Burgess as a fan.

taffy is Iris (vocals and guitars), Ken (drums and chorus), Takeshi (bass and chorus) and Rio (guitar and chorus).

released January 24, 2025

The album was recorded at Sound Crew Studio, Tokyo with Toshiro Kai, taffy’s “fifth” member, who they have been working with since the band’s debut album ‘Caramel Sunset’, released in 2012.

Envy - Eunoia

Envy - Eunoia

Soaring past the 30-year mark as a band, Japan’s envy returns with their 8th studio album, Eunoia. Packed with an abyssal emotional depth and an increasingly eclectic (and seemingly inexhaustible) well of ideas, Eunoia is envy’s most efficiently impactful album of their unbelievably lengthy career. A major personnel shift in 2018 threatened the very existence of envy, but it instead inspired enormous growth and reinvigorated the band on their second album together with this new line-up. As founding member and songwriter, Nobukata Kawai, explains: “The concept of creating the album was to honestly face our own powerlessness. Searching for a little hope, and recording the emotions gained from daily life in a diary-like manner. Even without explaining the songs, Tetsu's lyrics were wonderful and added depth to the piece. It has been six years since the member line-up changed, and the good relationship of trust has been strongly reflected in the work.” envy are an underground institution that has literally inspired entire sub-genres of music.

Their creative and cultural influence in undeniable, and their legacy was cemented long ago. The fact that they’re still breaking new ground more than three decades in is a testament to the unique and extraordinary power and pull of envy, and Eunoia emits that power and pull with the natural weight and wonder of a total eclipse.

A dream pop band from Kyoto, exploring sounds that drift between dream and reality — like the soft glow of morning light or the quiet shimmer of the sea at night. They weave together fragments drawn from films, novels, and the subtle flow of everyday life, transforming them into music.

Since forming in 2017, the band has continued to create at their own gentle pace. Their sound resonates with the aesthetics of indie rock bands from labels like 4AD, and their songs have found listeners not only in Japan but also internationally, through platforms like Bandcamp and Soundcloud.

As of March 2025, they have released four singles and one EP, with their first-ever mini-album set for release in April.

Subsonic Eye - Singapore Dreaming

Subsonic Eye - Singapore Dreaming Subsonic Eye - Songs from Singapore Dreaming (Live)

In less than a ten-year span, Subsonic Eye have established a deep catalog across jangle- and indie-pop spectra. On their 2023 album All Around You, the Singaporean five-piece refined their signature snappy hooks with a renewed appreciation for the natural world’s entanglement with their urban milieu. Ever enraptured by nature and their surroundings, Subsonic Eye have dedicated much of their music to celebrations of their environment.

Their fifth album, Singapore Dreaming, centers their hometown through a more focused lens. Where All Around You comprised a space to sit with the complex feelings inspired by the intense world we inhabit, Singapore Dreaming is that intense world itself — Subsonic Eye’s interpretation of their high energy urban context refracted through straight-to-the-point, poppy, ergonomic songs tinged with tension that could explode at a moment’s notice.

Despite the newly honed vision, Singapore Dreaming still has all of Subsonic Eye’s signature elements: spellbinding walls of tone, hooky riffs, zippy rhythms, and punches in the perfect place — all led by singer Nur Wahidah’s dreamlike voice, whose vaporous and velvety character always makes the layers whole.
Singapore Dreaming’s lead single “Aku Cemas” picks apart feelings of anxious inadequacy inspired by our capitalist setting before balancing the scale with a reverent climax in which Wahidah proclaims “come get a hold of yourself / the world’s not ending / you’re not dying.” On album closer “Blue Mountains,” Subsonic Eye offer a reprieve from capitalist dread with a breath of fresh air inspired by a visit to the Australian mountain range. Of her experience, Wahidah writes, “when I’m out in nature, I’m in awe, I’m speechless, I’m humbled — I’m a student in the most beautiful classroom that has ever existed.”
This casual wisdom permeates the entirety of Singapore Dreaming, which takes its title from the movie of the same name. Overlapping themes of consumerist abandon and suffocating work culture tie the two together, both works a critique of the disregard for the people around us and our blurry separations between work and life. But Subsonic Eye refuse to succumb to the pressures and chaos, instead choosing to ground themselves in their culture and community.

The Wulongs - Videodrome

The Wulongs - Videodrome

We’d like to briefly introduce the Wulongs.

"We’re a three-piece band, with Rev (guitar/vocals) and Omaika (bass/vocals) as the two lead vocalists. Sophie handles drums and all visual direction.

The Wulongs originally started by playing oldies covers at a Christmas party hosted by Rev’s father every year. At the time, it was just for fun — none of us planned to turn it into a proper band.

We generally keep all personal details and background information private, including where we’re based and how we work. We also don’t speak much on social media — our goal is to let the music reach people first, without explanation.

When we first uploaded our debut album to streaming platforms, we had made almost no preparations. But the next day, we noticed it was being shared as “a mysterious band” online. We liked that, and decided to keep going in that direction — staying quiet and letting curiosity do the work."

The Lemon Drop Gang is a garage pop justice league of sorts with Tucson AZ transplanted members have performed, recorded, toured and played in notable Minneapolis and Boston acclaimed acts such as The Magnolias, Magnatone, The Dogmatics, Beangirl, The Pork Torta, and Jonathan Richman. Drawing a lot from '60s pop and girl groups as well as '70s punk and new wave on their brand new double A Side ripper "I'm Done" b/w "Johnny Is A Jerk". They are at their core a melodic guitar pop band. But their songs have hidden layers and take surprising turns. And in there with the punk, garage, and power pop influences, you can definitely hear some eerie, distinctly southwestern undertones. High energy burners mixed with haunting tales of psychotic love make The Lemon Drop Gang a complete experience in any deranged mind.

Les Rallizes Dénudés - Jittoku '76

Les Rallizes Dénudés - Jittoku '76

Opened in 1973, Jittoku is one of Kyoto’s most iconic venues, housed in a renovated traditional storehouse. While Les Rallizes Dénudés often played in their hometown, fans always eagerly awaited their return to the old city. This newly discovered tape captures their July 30, 1976 performance at Jittoku.

“Something is different about the Rallizes in Kyoto. They just sound different,” those close to the band have long said.

The 1976 lineup featured original members Takashi Mizutani (vocals/guitar) and Takashi Nakamura (guitar), joined by Hiroshi Nar (bass)—formerly of Zunou Keisatsu and Datetenryu—and drummer Sami (Toshiro Mimaki), who had been part of both the OZ staff and OZ Band in Tokyo. Many consider this period one of the band’s most vital. In 1976 the Rallizes began appearing at the newly opened YaneUra in Shibuya on an almost-monthly basis, while the music critic Akira Aida led efforts to produce a demo to try to get the band signed to Virgin Records (UK). That year the Rallizes also took part in the 3rd annual Sunset Carnival in Ishikawa prefecture on August 3 and 4, stopping in Kyoto on the way to the festival for two nights at Jittoku.

Recorded on a Marantz cassette deck using its internal mics, the tape unfortunately cuts off during the final track, “The Last One.” Still, producer Makoto Kubota recognized its potential and worked to revive the original performance’s spirit and shape it into an album.

Though recorded just months before ‘77 Live, Jittoku ‘76 features a notably different setlist. “Dream Again Today,” “Carnival,” and “Saw the Night in Your Eyes” appear for the first time. “Wilderness of False Flowers” is presented in a more aggressive, uptempo arrangement. The version of “Hibiscus Flower” heard here—hard, heavy, and essentially a new song—is unlike the one included with The Last One (Poésies) lyric book.

Jittoku ‘76 stands comfortably alongside ‘77 Live as an album that captures the raw energy that has always defined Les Rallizes Dénudés.
releases July 23, 2025

Since their inception in Kyoto in 1967, Les Rallizes Dénudés has gained an almost mythical status the world over with their unrelenting psychedelia and pure sonic assault. Led by the enigmatic Takashi Mizutani, the Rallizes remained an underground cult phenomenon throughout their three decade existence, and beyond.

Envy - Breathing and dying in this place…

Envy - Breathing and dying in this place…

The debut album that began the three-decade legacy of Japan’s most iconic and influential post-hardcore band is now available for release in North America for the first time ever! Originally released in 1996, Breathing and dying in this place… is Envy at its infancy – all fast-paced riffs, urgent screaming, and fairly straightforward song structures.

With the longest song clocking in at just over 2 minutes, this is obviously a very different band than the one who later made (and continue to make) long-form experimental post-hardcore classics. This is where Envy’s story starts.

Magic Bag - HAPPY TALK

Magic Bag - HAPPY TALK

This 3-piece pop combo plays pop and up-tempo numbers from the '60s and '70s, from British beats to R&B/GS/Japanese music, regardless of Western or Japanese music! The original songs include simple, straightforward bubblegum pop and two melancholic medium numbers.

Both songs feature a Rickenbacker 366 (1968) 12-string guitar, and are inspired by the '60s, but also have the essence of the '80s with a pop good sound! The cover songs are PICO's "I LOVE YOU" (1973) and Olive's "Come On...! (1970), and Tomonori Okazaki's "Kaze no Ute" (1973), three songs in total. All are pop, groovy, up-tempo numbers.
