Bristling with subtropical restlessness and bursting with energy, Hoo! was founded in Guangzhou in 2018, today its members are singer Luo Jun, guitarist Jiang Xianzhe, bassist Huang Jiage and drummer Li Yuanzhen. With individual interests which range from snacking on weilong to admiring pretty girls, Hoo! are united in their fandom of TOUMING MAGAZINE and their habit of pulling all-nighters, more to the point they are a gang of fiery youths searching for meaning in the face of myriad pressures.
Hoo!’s music brings together indie rock’s DIY sensibilities with the well-known nonchalance of Generation Z. Possessing of both an ardent fierceness and a wickedly clever sensibility, and drawing on explosive guitar riffs and Luo Jun’s dynamic vocal lines, they have boldly forged their own path among a crowd of post-95 generation soft rock bands. Since joining Merrie Records, the band has had a year packed with performances, and the summer release of their first album Hoo! is the natural result of all their hard work.
The cathartic venting of inner emotions, the light-hearted and cute reverie, the secret diary of intimate thoughts and feelings... these differing modes of self-portrayal materialise across the 8 songs of the album. Writing mainly within the style of indie rock, woven in and out of each of the eight songs are the band members’ day-to-day experiences of joy, despondency and whimsy, and, just like in their self-made video clips, they record their lives at the speed of 24 frames per second. Luo Jun calls BAKA a “Japanese style montage of an episode in the life of an assassin,” it’s the most raw and energetic song of the album, and a sure fire hit in Hoo!’s live performances. But assassins are also known to kick back in the city and go for the occasional ‘ramble’, wander into the pub and ruminate over floating ‘beer bubbles’... they might experience the kind of conflicted romance, at once nervous and buoyant, portrayed in the song Gill... or they might run for all their worth towards a long-dreamed about place, arms in the air shouting: “Oh world!”
The album cover is designed by Taiwanese illustrator Chen Nianying, an Instagram friend of lead singer Luo Jun. Moved by Hoo!’s work, Chen Nianying has poured her unfailing decorative style and youthful spirit into the design of the album. The picture of the panda bear Blue in the previously released video clip Blue Blue reappears on the cover of this album: after leaving its room to go outside, it continues exploring the world, yearning for a future in which it can grow up with wanton abandon.
