타인의 마음 Other's Mind - 빅베트 Bigbet

타인의 마음 Other's Mind - 빅베트 Bigbet

Bigbet was formed in 2011 as an offshoot of singersong-writer Saebom Choi’s(SP, known as Big baby driver) earlier music project along with her previous band “Atombook”’s bassist Oksung Baek, and Yongjoon Lee, then drummer of shoegazing rock band “Vidulgy Ooyoo”. Influenced by simplicity and innocence of earlier indie rock as well as groovy R&B, the collective slowly developed musical taste as a whole while occasionally performing at venues around Hongdae - the center of Korea’s indie music. Eventually they began recording a self-titled debut album [Big Baby Driver Trio] in winter of 2015. Shortly after releasing their first effort, former bassist of “I should have brought a camera in my dream” Kyungseo Ki joined as a guitarist. Completing the line-up the band changed name to Bigbet which was an abbreviation of Big Baby Driver Trio and released single [B22/ Rainbow Boy]. 4-piece Bigbet has not stopped exploring the musical direction at rehearsal studio and small stage. Finally 5 tracks including two previously released tracks on a compilation album and single respectively, selected for an EP [Other’s Mind].

“By adding a new member I was expecting strong instrumental parts and more complexity in arrangement, but our sound ended up song-oriented style because that fit us.”

[Other’s Mind] opens with a reverb-driven indie rock track “Norae”(means a song in Korean). Inspired by Goethe’s 1809 novel Elective Affinities, this opener whose subtitle is “Affinity” asks simple but intriguing questions; Why does a song bring another song? Why do some emotions and thoughts evoke similar emotions and thoughts? Why am I more attracted to you? Why does a cat bring in another cat? Unaffected yet emotional “Goodbye” confessed the breakup with familiar feelings, places and loved ones which made us who we are now. “Synchronicity” previously appeared on Electric Muse 10th Anniversary Compilation was rearranged and reproduced. Conceived approximately 10 years ago, “Rainbow Boy” was named after a nickname of sp’s then bandmate. Furthemore originally intended for him to sing. Now this track expresses support for LGBTQ. EP’s closing track “Mirror Ball” reflects all the haunting emotions when seeing a spinning, glittering, beautiful sphere - mirror ball. Although written quickly the track took some time for the right arrangement.
“I didn’t like reverb pedal at all, but around the band’s first recording session I started really into reverb and delay that aspect affected songwriting as well as arrangement, I guess. I added a new fuzz on my pedalboard for this EP, likewise tried vintage fender and marshall amps. Usually I play synths myself, but for this EP keyboardist Seunghye Yoo was invited for a more popular sound.
