LUWTEN - Door Album · 2020

LUWTEN - Door Album · 2020

“There’s nothing I lose when I’m losing you”, Tessa Douwstra, aka Luwten, asserts during the climax of ‘Control’. It’s one of the many signature zingers of the Dutch producer, songwriter and musician. Luwten's forthcoming music marks a step towards a new creative chapter. She considers these songs a study of a perfectionist who acknowledges that everything’s in constant flux. The embrace lies in the search itself, both as musician and as a human being. By splicing artificial sounds with organic instrumentation, samples and field recordings, Douwstra explores one of life's bigger emotional beats: how to reconcile a yearning for both solitude and companionship, a quandary the world of today is suddenly coping with on a massive scale. Within that tricky balance, Tessa finds solace in small, bemused observations she can hold onto like cherished mementos. ‘Airport’ explores the crossroads of a relationship, playfully using a quote from Esther Perel – creator of the podcast Where Should We Begin – as a sample. “I feel like (Perel) is providing my generation with words on how to talk about these things. It feels like romanticism and relationships are being redefined at the moment and I find it interesting to listen to these ideas and think about them.” Luwten's songs evoke the feeling of an unspoken understanding with someone very close to you: to instinctively know when things can remain unresolved, when they can't and when it’s okay to let the noise of the world run its course.

LUWTEN - LUWTEN

LUWTEN - LUWTEN

The maxim for LUWTEN, Tessa Douwstra's creative conduit, is a simple one: space is the place. Well, maybe not outer space specifically, but a space unburdened by the strain of ones surroundings. A place where only one thing truly matters: the desire to create something that didn't exist yesterday.

LUWTEN's music encapsulates that much-needed stroll around the block to clear your mind. A tranquil space to properly arrange perceptions of difference and similarity. Through her songs, Douwstra emboldens the shy person who musters the courage to withdraw. The person who'd rather consider all interactions, choices and dreams at his or her own desired pace.

During the album's writing and recording process, Douwstra found a rewarding collaborator in percussionist and producer Frank Wienk (BINKBEATS). The album's supple, meticulous compositions are the result of two full years of exploring sounds, feeling ones way in the dark and unfurling elemental, once-veiled emotions to their bare essence. Douwstra's voice radiates like a human source of warmth amidst the music's glacial, free-flowing machinery.

If by design this collection songs has a purpose, it is to remind oneself to enjoy and cherish your natural state in isolation, without influence from the outside world. And congruently, delaying the very act that both hampers and fuels Douwstra's intrinsic enthusiasm and urgency to create: to walk back on that stage.
