Rainbow Chan - Stanley

Rainbow Chan - Stanley

Inspired by the recorded mixtapes of Rainbow Chan’s grandmother’s bedside, Stanley is like an old, loved tape, re-recorded and passed down through generations of family, but always retaining traces of its warm core. Completely self produced, Stanley is a celebration of classic song-writing through melancholy and nostalgia.

'Over the last year, Hong Kong, my birthplace, has undergone significant changes. Not being able to travel back due to COVID-19 only amplified my feelings of loss and sadness. What would be left when I returned? In isolation, I started to write farewell songs - half addressed to a lover, half addressed to the city. I conjured the sounds of my childhood – Teresa Teng, Momoe Yamaguchi, Faye Wong. These great singers have perfected the sentimental ballad, turning grief into a beautiful flower or a delicate hand gesture. On this EP, I’m leaning into this performative romanticism. As always, there is an underlying experimental electronic spirit to my music, inspired by the sounds of Mica Levi and Japanese pioneers like Yellow Magic Orchestra. These songs ultimately celebrate classic song-writing through melancholy and nostalgia.'

Rainbow Chan is a vocalist, producer and multi-disciplinary artist who has built a reputation as one of the most innovative musicians in Australia. Driven by a DIY spirit, Chan melds catchy melodies and off-kilter beats made up of field-recordings and found sounds. Both heartbreaking and tender at once, her idiosyncratic brand of pop holds a mirror up to diasporic experiences, and also deeply personal tales of love and loss.

Chan’s debut record "Spacings" (Silo Arts & Records, 2016) was feature album on community radio stations nationwide and nominated for FBi SMAC Record of the Year, and AIR Best Dance/Electronica Album. Rainbow was FBi's most played artist in 2016, and her single "Nest" was also the most played song. Lifted from the EP "Fabrica" (Healthy Tapes, 2017), her single "Let Me" won the FBi SMAC Award for Best Song.

Chan has performed at renowned venues and festivals internationally including Sydney Opera House, Vivid, MONA FOMA, Gallery of Modern Art, Melbourne Music Week, Iceland Airwaves, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and Tai Kwun (Hong Kong). Additionally, her musical installations have been exhibited with Firstdraft Gallery, Liquid Architecture, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and I-Project Space, Beijing.

Chan is a passionate mentor and has worked with MusicNSW, I.C.E Parramatta, Hack Sounds, Club Weld and Bunga Barrabugu programs at Sydney Conservatorium where she teaches in Bachelor of Contemporary Music.

With a flair for diverse and nuanced songwriting, Chan is signed to Gaga Music Publishing and has produced soundtracks for ABC web documentary, "The Glass Bedroom" (2017) and a live score for Art Gallery of NSW’s “Starburst”: Chinese Film Season (2018).

Picked by The Guardian for “Best Australian New Music” last month, Rainbow Chan released her sophomore album “Pillar” in June and is heading on a national tour throughout August.

Rainbow Chan - Promises 諾言

Rainbow Chan - Promises 諾言

Chun Yin Rainbow Chan works across music, performance and installation. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Sydney, Rainbow is interested in mistranslations, diaspora and the effects of globalisation on modern Chinese society. Her research engages with the authentic and the copy, exploring sites of exchange and desire which complicate Western notions of originality and appropriate consumption. Central to Rainbow's work is the circulation of knock-off objects, sounds and images in global media. Her work positions the fake as a complex sign that shapes new myths, values and contemporary commodity production.

Tying together her works across installation and pop music is the relationship between nostalgia, migration and identity. She released her debut record Spacings (Silo Arts & Records) in 2016, which was feature album on FBi Radio, Radio Adelaide, RTRFM, and nominated for SMAC Awards 2016 (Best Live Act, Record of the Year). Under her techno project, Chunyin, Rainbow released Code Switch EP on UK label, Off Out, in 2016.

Her most recent release, FABRICA (Healthy Tapes), further utilises pop hooks, fractured samples and incisive lyrics to interrogate love, power and gender relations. Its lead single, "Let Me" won Best Song of 2017 in FBi Radio's Sydney Music, Arts & Culture Awards.

Rainbow has performed extensively including live appearances at Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art, Gallery of Modern Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Old and New Art, and Iceland Airwaves. Her installations have been exhibited with Firstdraft Gallery, Liquid Architecture, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Longli International New Media Arts Festival, China, and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

Rainbow Chan - Fabrica EP

Rainbow Chan - Fabrica EP

FABRICA 巧
"I am a tender creature with no edges.
Across the road, the last light of an office building is being switched off. I lay on my apartment floor with one hand on my stomach. Through an old cotton t-shirt, I feel my breaths—deep and drawn out. I have so many questions and not enough tears to shed as placeholders for the answers. Where do we start sifting through the ruins?
One must be very clever to be a liar. After all, the word “fabricate” is derived from fabrica, which means skilfully crafted. I mull over the ways language can be twisted and spun. With enough repetition, fictions turn into truths. Fabrications are woven into a social fabric that envelopes all bodies.

It was Vesalius who used the word fabrica to describe the skilful design of the human anatomy. In many ways, he was right. I am a resilient machine; my body, a wondrous assemblage of parts. Just as a piece of fabric can withstand tension, I am soft, yet I am strong. But today, I am very, very tired.

A shapeless mass on the floor, a scrunched-up cloth."

Rainbow Chan - Let Me

Rainbow Chan - Let Me

Rainbow Chan is a Sydney-based singer/producer via Hong Kong. A fervent collector of sounds, Rainbow has a penchant for blending saccharine melodies and left-of-centre beats. Since taking out FBi Radio’s Northern Lights Competition in 2011, Rainbow has been building a reputation as one of the most innovative musicians on the scene with her brand of pop.

While classically trained in saxophone, piano and choral singing, Rainbow’s fondest musical memories are those of family day trips in a squishy car, singing along to mix-tapes sent from her grandmother in Hong Kong. From Chinese folksongs to Western ballads, Grandma’s hodgepodge tapes would have a lasting impression on her music. Rainbow has been interested in the idea of intersections and hybridity from an early age—the resultant work is a delicious collage of seemingly disparate sounds and cultures.

Described as “genuinely refreshing”, her 2013 Long Vacation EP was met with critical acclaim and attracted the attention of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Nick Zinner who gave “Haircut” a jangly remix. A captivating live performer, Rainbow has played at cutting-edge festivals such as Iceland Airwaves, Dark Mofo, Camp A Low Hum, Vivid Festival and has supported the likes of Maria Minerva, Baths, L-VIS 1990 and Bok Bok.

Rainbow Chan has been busy preparing for the release of her debut album, Spacings. The record is about distance, impossible intimacies and things that relentlessly collapse upon themselves. Not shying away from pop tropes, Rainbow fragments and reconfigures the familiar into strange mosaic pieces. Warped tones reminiscent of early Japanese electronic producers rub against modern RnB hooks. Most compelling are her vocal arrangements which oscillate between choral, soulful and the post-human. It is her most confident and refined work yet. Spacings will be released on Silo Arts & Records in 2016.

Rainbow Chan - Last

Rainbow Chan - Last

Sydney-based artist Rainbow Chan has dropped her new smooth new track "Last".

It's an intricate track with some soothing vocals on top of some ridiculously layered percussion which really creates an eclectic sound. Rainbow Chan shows off her multi-faceted music background, by creating something complex despite its pop influences.

Since winning FBi's Northern Lights competition in 2011 she's gone from strength to strength, and if this "Last" track is anything to go by it's safe to say her upcoming album will be one to keep an ear out for.
