They / Live - Ablation

They / Live - Ablation

“The Utah-born musician takes the vocal skill and passion of a Holly Dodson or a Kate Bush, mixes it with a dash of Italo, and a hint of the brooding sounds of Carpenter Brut to deliver a masterclass in electropop.” —Mark Buckley, Analogue Trash
Named after the 1988 John Carpenter sci-fi/action film, Whitney Mower’s new project They/Live pays homage to artists of that era (like Kate Bush and Cocteau Twins ) while weaving in sounds, themes, and a powerful female perspective very much rooted in the present (think Grimes, Juana Molina, The Knife). Using ethereal synth lines, intricate drum patterns, and haunting vocal layers, Mower builds complex dystopic scenes. In They/Live’s universe, a vulnerable female character finds power and offers hope despite the ominous landscape of the future, despite the pain of an oppressive past—her precise soprano voice urges, “Yes I know the pleasure’s not enough . . . if you let me I’ll lift you out of the darkness.”
Produced by Whitney Mower and Alex Dupree, engineered and mixed by Grammy award winner and Khruangbin producer, Steve Christensen, They/Live's full length 'Ablation', arrives on physical and digital via Born Losers Records. released May 8, 2020
