Canceled Plans is a band that makes music for people who like to stay home.
The solo project, by twenty-year-old Michigan-native Michaela Stock, is driven by pop melodies and production yet rooted in indie folk and Americana . In the year since its start, Stock has been placed on bills with artists like Michigander, Brother Elsey and All is Well in the state's most notable venues including Bell's Brewery, Mac's Bar, The Robin Theatre and The Pyramid Scheme.
Music wasn't always Stock's thing, though. After joining her dream ballet company in high school, injuries knocked her off of her feet and left her questioning what's next. While recovering, Stock picked up a guitar and started writing music at age 17. She played her first bill in April of 2017 and launched Canceled Plans on New Years Day in 2018.
"I never thought I'd play these songs outside my bedroom," Stock said of her originals. "Not to mention crowds and shows kind of freaked me out. I'd almost always rather be home with a book and tea then at a bar."
Despite this, Michaela finds herself going to shows weekly. She's started working for local bands and venues and has since fallen in love with the DIY scene. "I've made my best friends through music. I want everyone to experience this."
Canceled Plans began out of the desire to carve a space for introverts in a loud, flashy industry. Stock's goal for Canceled Plans is to send a message to the quiet ones that says, "I see you and I hear you, even if you're standing still in the back of the venue." As an introvert, Stock knows that dancing and singing isn't the only way to enjoy a performance, "Though it can be fun," she says. "Sometimes."
In 2019, Michaela is releasing her debut single. She plans to keep playing bills she's proud to support and working to open up the music industry to be more inclusive to all people, specifically to introverts and women.
