Tanukichan - Sundays

Tanukichan - Sundays

Tanukichan is the solo project of Bay Area-based Hannah van Loon. After growing up making and performing classical music and playing the violin, keys, bass and guitar, van Loon experimented with bluegrass and jazz and unexpectedly fell into making pop music with San Francisco band Trails and Ways. She toured and performed with the band for four years before feeling a need to focus on her own music again, which led to her creating solo songs and being introduced by a mutual friend to Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi and Les Sins. Bear helped her to rework most of the songs and take chances on fully forming a new sonic direction.

Produced by Bear, the record is a shoegazy and personal approach to love, loss and longing, melding vague, devastating lyrics with gorgeous dream pop music. It's a beautiful homage to recognizing your reality, and the wants of the people around you and deciding how you will move on and grow as a person. The music sounds at home both at a beach and in a quiet bedroom, music made for the weekend days where relaxing and reflecting commingle, the long summer days that you hope will never end.

Steady Holiday - Holiday

Steady Holiday - Holiday

After growing up playing in bands in and around her native Los Angeles, Dre Babinski began writing and recording songs of her own, always in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself that ultimately formed under the name Steady Holiday.

Her debut LP Under the Influence was released in 2016 to immediate praise and shows with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Mitski, Islands, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, with LA Weekly naming her the city’s Best Solo Artist. In 2017 she released the follow up EP Terror, written immediately following the 2016 election.

In 2018 Steady Holiday signed to the legendary indie label Barsuk for her sophomore LP 'Nobody's Watching', which explored themes like greed, fear and self-interest. Her first headline tours in North America, Japan, and UK/Europe followed, and in 2019 she plays both SXSW and Coachella.

Second Still - Violet Phase

Second Still - Violet Phase

Second Still's 2nd LP.,  Fabrika/sentimental Records, released May 17, 2019

Second Still is a three piece post-punk/coldwave band from Los Angeles, CA. Combining the definitive sounds of French coldwave with the unconventional time signatures of No Wave, then layering that hybrid with hauntingly beautiful vocal melodies, Second Still crafts a sound soaked in nostalgia but also one that marches onwards towards the future. Infectious bass lines infiltrate your body and attack your senses. Guitar phrases glide in undulating melodic waves that peak into moments of formidable delay feedback. Heavyweight drum machine beats feel like punches to the gut. Combing the 80s underground for only the best of influences like Xmal Deutschland, Garlands-era Cocteau Twin, Asylum Party, and Opera De Nuit, Second Still invokes the classic wave of La Vague Froide as their sound washes over you.

Sandy Hsu - She Comes To Me In A Fever Dream

Sandy Hsu - She Comes To Me In A Fever Dream

Sandy Hsu is a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter and multidisciplinary artist. She creates a lyrical world that is articulate, brutally honest, and almost intrusive to listen to. A collection of vivid story telling, her music is saturated with earnest nostalgia, raw sentiments and self-awareness. She is drawn to song-writing through it’s ability to capture fleeting moments in life and immortalise them forever. These personal insights, woven within expansive ambient landscapes and pop melodies have the ability to sound like a dream yet feel like a harsh awakening.
Photo: Danielle Zhang

Enamoured by the raw potential of the human voice, she believes that singing is a form of expression that comes closest to being one of the most genuine representations of pure human emotion and feeling. Her work details strongly around femininity, identity, youth, the human condition and the mundanities of real life. With a keen and natural inclination towards creativity from a young age, she had an untameable desire to envelope herself with music and art.

A recent graduate from The Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in Interactive Composition, Sandy has stayed inspired and has since released a new single titled ‘Limbo’ (2019). To her, music is particularly special because it has the ability to be the mediator for other art forms — such as visual art, fashion, and live performance. The ultimate dream is to use the arts as an ongoing platform for unadulterated self-expression.

Puffyshoes - Imaginary Lover

Puffyshoes - Imaginary Lover

Puffyshoes started in Tokyo, Japan in April 2009 as a duo of Neko Meows (drums/vocals), and Usagi Hops (guitar/vocals).

They released cassettes and CDs from labels in Canada, France and Japan as soon as joined Puffyshoes. They sound so simple, crunchy chords with deep reverb and tiny drum kit beating out loud, but it’s really sweet and pop. Their debut was a part of the show curated by Afrirampo in September 2009, then they shared the stages with many bands that were not only pop bands like Puffyshoes also hardcore, grindcore and noise. That helped them become sorta controversial and popular in the underground and hip music communities.

Bo-Peep - Thank You

Bo-Peep - Thank You

From the heart of Fukuoka’s underground scene come Bo-Peep, three girls representing a generation raised on ’90s grunge and making a startlingly hard sound.

Bo-Peep are a three-piece girl band (guitar, bass and drums) with no added nonsense, achieving the utmost simple chaos from their instruments, tough-brittle lyrics and cage-rattling vocals. Like the best of Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins’ music, at the core of that chaos lies pure harmony surrounding solid, catchy melodies – and in that blend comes their originality.

In 2008 Bo-Peep presented their second full-length album‘SICK ORANGE TELEVISION’, while the first album ‘Is It Good For You’ was released in the UK, the recordings capture the aura and power of their live performances, which see the band savage the stage like girls possessed, from Japan’s prestigious Fuji Rock festival all the way to Britain’s In The City, The Great Escape, London Calling festivals, and beyond.

mxmtoon - The masquerade

mxmtoon - The masquerade

mxmtoon - dream of you (acoustic) [video]

mxmtoon (pronounced em-ex-em-toon) is the moniker of 18-year-old maia, the oakland-based singer, songwriter, and ukulele player who has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers online for her highly relatable songs that either make you want to belly laugh or weep along with her and her self-deprecating and goofy youtube videos. she sings of love, friendship, racial identity, and more, lyrically taking a dive into the common insecurities of the coming-of-age teenager. on her debut EP, 'plum blossom,' she continues that run of thoughtful considerations with more songs about romance, body confidence, and more, all recorded from the confines of her parents' guest room. passionate, genuine, and warm, mxmtoon feels like a friend you can rely on, in bad times and good.

Coming Up Roses - Waters

Coming Up Roses - Waters

Weaving their songs out of their adolescent experiences, alt-rock/shoegaze quartet Coming Up Roses balances the worlds of child-like innocence and idealism with the revelations that come with adulthood. Combining elements of pop, grunge, heavy-metal and shoegaze, the band manifests their emotions through the use of evocative vocal melodies and expansive sonic textures.
Led by vocalist-bassist Emily Sera, and completed by guitarists Darius Oon, Lorenzo Romero and drummer Bruce Tan, Coming Up Roses recalls the likes of Wolf Alice and Sonic Youth.
After releasing a series of demo recordings in 2018, the band earned a spot on the illustrious Baybeats Festival line-up that year and gained a reputation for their dynamic live shows, subsequently releasing their debut mini-album, "Waters", in May 2019.

Currently, the band plans to build on their live shows in Singapore and establish their artist profile as one of the country’s most exciting live acts.

Annabel Allum - Gravel Not The Grave, Album - 2019

Annabel Allum - Gravel Not The Grave, Album - 2019

Loaded with pulsating hooks and enigmatic tenacious vocals, Annabel Allum oozes charisma and showcases an inept ability to marry folk-style storytelling with snarling fuzzy indie. The Guildford-based singer-songwriter has been backed across tastemaker platforms as one of the most vitally sarcastic voices in the indie scene, with praise coming from key press voices in FADER, DIY and The Line of Best Fit as well as on the airwaves. ‘Beat the Birds’, taken from 2018’s ‘Sorry I’m Not Perceptible’ EP, found its place on the Radio 1 BBC Introducing Playlist, Huw Stephens chose it as his Introducing Track of the Week, and earned her a spot at BBC Music’s The Biggest Weekend in Swansea.

Annabel has performed a number of prestigious slots in the last twelve months, most notably supporting the iconic Beth Ditto across her UK/EU tour at the back end of 2017, as well as sharing the stage with Nadine Shah, Blaenavon and more. Sets at The Great Escape, Live at Leeds and SXSW last year brought her to wider international attention, whilst a fiery performance at her biggest headline show to date at London’s Camden Assembly in February signalled a real statement of intent. With performances lined up at Boardmasters, Siren Festival, Neverworld and Reading Festival this summer, and her first UK headline toured locked in for the Autumn, the future looks extremely bright for Allum.
