緩緩 Huan Huan is a Taiwanese band formed in Taipei, Taiwan in 2016. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Coco, guitarist Myles, bassist Paul and drummer Yi Jen. Since "huan huan" means "slowly" in Mandarin, Huan Huan's music is soft yet resilient, trying to make sounds of healing and sings for the uncertainties of life. Throughout their discographies from 2017 to 2022, their music is often described as shoegaze, dream-pop and folk-rock.

In September 2017, Huan Huan introduced themselves to the world with their debut self-titled EP and has gained attention ever since. Then in March 2019, Huan Huan returned with another two-song EP, "Charlie". Following the shoegaze musical style from their first EP, the A-side song "Charlie" created a unique vibe by combining tender vocal lines with space-like guitar noise and strong beats. On the other hand, the other song "Indiepop" in the second EP has a vintage indie tone with catchy guitar riffs and cute lyrics, giving the audience a hint of Huan Huan's diverse musical style in their following journey. The release party of "Charlie" was held in a church in Taiwan National University and the beautiful vibe was also well-filmed.

In October 2020, Huan Huan announced their debut album, "Water Can Go Anywhere", along with their first Taiwan tour in support. In this album, Huan Huan has discovered a rather clean and pure sound by using instruments like acoustic guitar, synthesizer and percussions, which was their first time revealing elements of indie-folk and dream-pop. In the title track "Water Can Go Anywhere", with water being a metaphor of freedom, the vocalist and composer Coco expressed a complicated emotion: despite the fear and uncertainties we have in life, we are still free and able to break through ourselves to go anywhere further. Gaining even more attention and feedback since release, this album was nominated for Best New Artist by Golden Indie Music Awards and Best New Bands by Freshmusic Awards in 2021.

Although the pandemic had stopped artists from touring abroad during 2020 and 2021, Huan Huan's music still brought attention to the world after their debut album release. In 2021, they attended several international festivals online such as Primavera Pro in Spain, Bangkok Music City in Thailand and exPop!!!! in Japan.

In August 2022, Huan Huan announced their new EP, "Blue Room Orange Man", along with their new member Myles. According to vocalist and composer Coco, following their debut album, this EP had pushed further on exploring clean, indie and folk sounds by using classical guitar, synth bass and soft melodies. Content-wise, this EP had also depicted the inner state of Coco during the pandemic: being lonely, stuffy, and powerless while being cozy, hopeful and self-enjoyed at the same time. This EP has also brought Huan Huan abroad for the first time. In September 2022, Huan Huan was invited to ASEAN Music Festival in Singapore and had gained lots of positive feedbacks.

With their slow but rather firm pace, Huan Huan is planning to release their second album in 2023. At that time, Huan Huan will visit more places with their unique sounds and heal more cities for sure. https://huanhuantw.com/biography

Dabda / 다브다 - Yonder

Dabda / 다브다 - Yonder

“We tried to capture the yearning and wishing of nature itself in our latest EP. The power of nature I felt during my trip to Thailand was an intense experience. The gap between the manufactured nature in vacation spots, which we usually are comforted with, and the nature that exists wildly was interesting. We tried to capture the changing of air according to the season when the songs were made and I hope that the various temperaments of nature contained in each song will comfort and liberate the listeners. The instrumental track “Playing with Fire” contains nature as a roaring fire-like power. The intro track played during the start of our performance was the starting point of the idea. “Flower Tail” tells the story of a voyage through the horizon, sailing on a flower boat in the tropical sea. At the same time, the song is about the ones who set sail and leave for somewhere. In southern Thailand, the bow of a long-tailed wooded boat is decorated with flowers of different shapes, which is said to be a wish for the well-being of fishermen leaving for the sea. The third track, “Origin,” contains the pitifulness of the weight of earnest prayers and hopes. The fourth track “Cloud City” features an image of a city mixed with overflowing love songs and disturbing noise. The final track “One, World, Wound” started with a melody made from humming. The song, which concludes the EP, contains comfort given out to each individual’s wounds. We ourselves, who live on with our own wounds, can become another wound to someone. Everything we do has equal value and the most important thing is to get up and do something. I wish you would come back and listen to this song whenever you struggle with everything feels meaningless.”

The 5,6,7,8's - Teenage Mojo Workout

The 5,6,7,8's - Teenage Mojo Workout

Teenage Mojo Workout is twelve tracks of authentic rock'n'roll, twist and jive from the Tarantino-sponsored 5, 6, 7, 8's. Featuring half an album of covers (including 'Hanky Panky' and 'Harlem Shuffle') and a host of thrilling originals, 'Teenage Mojo Workout' proves that there's more to this band than just 'woo hoo'.
(Sweet Nothing)

While their biggest international exposure was a cameo in the Tarantino flick Kill Bill, 5.6.7.8's are much more than one-hit wonders, bearing the proud distinction of being the prime and longest-enduring Japanese garage rock girl band. Featuring a revolving cast of musicians (only one of them ever being a boy) and possessing small but loyal fanbases in countries from China to the U.S., 5.6.7.8's is the brainchild of the sisters Ronnie "Yoshiko" Fujiyama and Fujii Sachiko, and it reflects their love for music of the '50s to the '80s, bluntly alluded to in the group's name.

The band was formed in 1986, at the height of the garage rock hype that seized Tokyo at the time. The first lineup included Fujiyama, who handled the vocals, and Sachiko (the drummer), supported by guitarist Rico and bassist Yoshie, who was replaced by Mikako in time for the band's debut demo Golden Hits of the 5.6.7.8's (1988). It was followed by the band's first EP Mondo Girls A-Go-Go (1989). In 1990 Rico and Mikako defected to start

, and were replaced by bassist Akiko Omo and guitarist Eddie Legend, the sole male member of the group, who used to don a wig to blend in better when they played live, but still lasted only a year before departing to start MAD3. After that, Fujiyama picked up the guitar herself, although 5.6.7.8's still performed as a quartet, with support member Gaku on the saxophone. The band's first full-length album, The 5.6.7.8's Can't Help It!, was recorded in 1991, out not only in Japan, but in Australia and the U.S. as well (the American release came in 1992). That began a period of the band's active overseas expansion: they toured Australia and America and released the single The Spell Stroll on the French label Wee Records. Japan remained their main playground -- they had several releases there in the '90s, namely EPs I Was a Teenage Cave Woman (1992) and Pin Heel Stomp (1997), as well as the second full-length The 5.6.7.8's (1994), -- but they also had six singles and the EP Bomb the Twist (1995) out in the U.S. The lineup continued to shift, with guitarist Aya joining the band for several months in 1995, and Omo leaving before their first big Japanese tour in 1996, replaced by Yamaguchi Yoshiko. In 1997, Fujiyama took a short break from the band, releasing the solo single Coney Island.

The years between 1998 and 2002 saw no releases, but some heavy touring in Japan, America, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. In 2002, Quentin Tarantino heard their CD in a clothing shop in Tokyo, and soon invited them to star as themselves in a Kill Bill scene (they contributed the song "Woo Hoo" for the movie soundtrack). 2002 also saw 5.6.7.8's releasing the album Teenage Mojo Workout and the EP Pretty Little Lilly Can Dance No More, and their compilation Best Hits of the 5.6.7.8's came out in America and Japan in 2003 (it was released in Europe the next year). In 2004, Teenage Mojo Workout was released in Britain, and the single Woo Hoo reached number 24 on the local charts, but long-term British success eluded them. The same year Yoshiko gave up her post for Omo, who returned to being 5.6.7.8's bassist after an eight-year hiatus. The band has kept quiet since 2004, releasing no new material but playing the occasional live show. ~ Alexey Eremenko, Rovi

Subsonic Eye - All Around You

Subsonic Eye - All Around You

Subsonic Eye are enraptured by nature. On their 2021 album, Nature of Things, the Singaporean five-piece explored the tolls of human indulgence through raw tonality and zippy jangle pop, poignantly celebrating the spirits of a natural world fast disappearing. Though the album saw the group trade their noisy dream-pop tendencies for a cleaner sound, the result was no less propulsive, instead pushing the band to refine their songwriting.

On their fourth full-length All Around You, Subsonic Eye expand on this relationship to nature with a renewed appreciation for its coexistence with urban cities. The hectic, fast-paced character of urban life refracts through snappy, invigorating hooks, prisms of entrancing tone layered with singer Nur Wahidah’s restless, velvety lilt.

All Around You’s lead track “Yearning” unravels the band’s religious dedication to the idea that nature is all around us, that we are whole with it. Sung over a nimble guitar melody and tension-building rhythm, “dunk my head into waters / wake me up fully new now” arrives in direct reference to Wahidah’s newfound perspective that we over indulgent humans can still find a harmonious balance with nature.

As if to make this harmony manifest, Subsonic Eye balance the scales with “Circle” and “J-O-B”, songs that pick apart the brutal and monotonous cycles of our capitalist setting. Though the subject matter can grind you down, the songs instill purpose and uplift listeners with undeniably hooky songwriting that combines the best of Alvvays and Sonic Youth.

The ten songs that comprise All Around You also comprise a space to sit with the complex feelings inspired by this intense world we inhabit. Rather than succumb to doom, Subsonic Eye relish the opportunity to meditate on these uncomfortable emotions to find their way to the ultimate realization that beauty is all around us.

The Twenties - Mindful Chaos

The Twenties - Mindful Chaos

After five years, the Beijing based independent band "The Twenties" returns with their second full-length album, "Mindful Chaos." This album is an intriguing and playful collection, capturing peculiar, witty, and somewhat illogical ideas. It humorously expresses the complexities and imperfections of human nature. Throughout the album, you'll experience those strange yet inevitable emotions and thoughts that arise deep within. While they might not be widely accepted, they remain an integral part of human existence. To make things right, you need to feel it.

"Mindful Chaos" continues the smooth melodies, alternative rock, and lo-fi haze that characterised their debut album "The Twenties." Tracks like "Just Like Your Mother" and "Swim with Whales" seem to transport us back to the tape-listening days of the '90s. Meanwhile, "Alarming Situation" and "Silence in the Car" delve profoundly and playfully into the inner turmoil of encountering someone you like, feeling overwhelmed, and eventually choosing to escape, akin to a form of paranoid neurosis. In addition to that, the album showcases some new breakthroughs in its arrangement. The Twenties, known for English compositions, sincerely presents five Chinese songs on this new album. On the instrumental side, the band ventures into more diverse orchestrations, such as using vintage game-like synthesisers in "Sunflowers" and crafting the wickedly chaotic yet organised “Gao Hua Er."

"Mindful Chaos" remains an independent production, with the digital album set to be released on August 3, 2023.

An indie rock band based in Beijing, consisting of Findy Zhao (Vocals, guitar), Wang Dongyang (guitar), Zhan Jiabao (Bass) and Xiao Jiang (Drums).

An alternative artist inspired by the previous decades. Nostalgia and sadness are often associated with her works– this has encouraged her to explore different genres such as grunge, progressive rock, garage rock. The "alternative" side had such an impact on her as a person that she is more comfortable to separate herself from the norm and from the current indie scene in the Philippines.
The musician visualizes, writes, records, produces and releases her tracks on her own from the comfort of her own home.

the Ape-ettes - Simply

the Ape-ettes - Simply

Simply is The Ape-ettes follow-up to their self-titled freshman album. First time on vinyl, these songs explore the trials and tribulations of taking care of others while also trying to take care of yourself. First off, “Trampoline” is a straight up breakup song. Track 2, “Rémi”, is a fun little banger about raising a son while attempting to maintain a cool mom vibe. “Inner Child” is a psychedelic little number about love, and most importantly, self-love. The grand finale is “Hearing Protection”, a punchy tune about trying to grow old gracefully and a PSA about the very real dangers of punk rock- induced hearing loss. All in all, The Ape-ettes hope to inspire healthy habits in self-care, like brushing your teeth and protecting your hearing, so we can all live a long and happy life.

Grrrl Gang - Spunky!

Grrrl Gang - Spunky! Grrrl Gang - Rude Awakening (Official Video) Grrrl Gang - Spunky! (Official Video)

Indonesian trio Grrrl Gang build on their considerable worldwide buzz with Spunky!, their full-length debut album. Released on 27 September 2023 by Green Island Music in partnership with exclusive licensees Kill Rock Stars (for North and South America), Trapped Animal Records (UK and EU) and Big Romantic Records (Japan and Taiwan), the album is preceded by its title track and first single which drops on May 31.

Spunky! arrives following some major life changes for Angeeta Sentana (vocals, guitar), Akbar Rumandung (bass, vocals) and Edo Alventa (guitar, vocals), including a switch in locale from Yogyakarta, the city where they formed the band while still in college. “This is Grrrl Gang’s first release after we graduated and got day jobs that made us have to move to Jakarta, which is undeniably 180 degrees compared to Yogya,” says Rumandung. “But moving to Jakarta enabled us to work with Lafa on Spunky! from start to finish.”

Overall, Spunky! is the sound of a band not content to rest on its laurels, despite gathering an impressive list of achievements since Grrrl Gang first got together in 2016 and proceeded to take the local, regional, and international indie scenes by storm, leading to a prestigious performance slot on the pandemic-induced online edition of SXSW 2021 and an A- review that esteemed music critic Robert Christgau bestowed upon Here to Stay!, the 2020 compilation of their early singles. According to Rumandung, “We want this album to show that we’ve changed, that Grrrl Gang is a band that isn’t stuck in one place and that we always have the urge to discover new things.”

In other words, Spunky! proves that Grrrl Gang are – to borrow a familiar phrase – here to stay.

Mikabomb - Hellcats

Mikabomb - Hellcats

Lead singer Mika arrived London in 1998, with only one thing on her mind – playing in a cool punk band. Recruitment for the now legendary line-up, began with the arrival in London of a teenage brat from Beijing who had everything you could want in a guitarist – Agi joined the band. Another Mika (bass) introduced an element of musicality to the bass department while a North London boy, Ergi, provided the unique hard hitting rhythms – the MIKABOMB sound was born.
Things started to pick up in 1999 when the band played what seemed like thousands of gigs at various venues around the country. The band were championed by Radio One DJ Steve Lamacq and received rave reviews across UK.

“The best band to ever come out of Japan” – Steve Lamacq.

“Four impossibly pretty Japanese girls playing spiky Tommy-gun punk like an on-form Elastica covering Shampoo”- NME.

In 2000, they signed as the hard-hitting new stars of Beastie Boys’ label Grand Royal, MIKA BOMB stormed into the West Country plugging their singles “Super sexy razor happy girls” and “Heart Attack”. Fusing Motown, New York punk, 50’ Garage and Japanese pop to form their distinctive, helter-skelter, distortion-heavy pop sound, The four Japanese girls are physically tiny, but once plugged into outrageously overdriven guitars, they are more than a match for any number of sweaty punters in the audience twice their size.

With the tragic (Lucky – Ed) demise of Grand Royal the album, ‘The Fake Fake sound of MIKA BOMB” was released through Damaged Goods in 2001

Finally in 2005 their second album ‘HellCats’ has been released alongside the single ‘Osaka’. Recorded at Gizzard studios in London this is more of the same Punk-Pop-Garage stuff the band are known for, it also includes a guest appearance from Holly Golightly on their cover of Holly’s ‘Won’t Go Out’.

The band split in late 2006 and went their separate ways leaving two great albums and a lot of great memories behind them.

“Mikabomb’s appeal is unintentional, but that’s exactly why it’s so appealing! Bonkers lyrics, Mental Oriental!!”
KKKK- Kerrang.
