Ken Yokoyama has been involved with a series of projects (including heading Pizza of Death Records), but one of the few to hold strongly was the Crazy Ken Band, a large contingent of musicians clustered around Yokoyama who perform something of a parody-based pop music.

The music is at its core a bit retro, with elements of pre-J-Pop (and pre-J-Rock) standing as the main components of the group's output. There's sentimentality exposed in the lyrics as well, references to a less sanitized Japan of the past and to the vices attached to it (as well as to muscle cars, a particular hobby of Yokoyama's), paralleling developments in other parts of Japanese culture (notably the noir elements of the extremely popular anime series Cowboy Bebop, and the close ties to jazz, blues, and rock infused in the series by Yoko Kanno). Though the band began forming in 1991, it wasn't until Yokoyama's return to "solo" projects around 2002 that the group took off as a force unto itself. The band's live performances have garnered most attention, though album releases have consistently performed well, with 2008's Zero easily staying in Oricon's Top Ten for an extended period. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi

Kahone Concept officially began in 2015, but the foundations of this Pittsburgh-based alternative pop/rock band were laid long before then. 21-year-old Ben Orrvick taught himself how to play a variety of instruments throughout his childhood, but as he’d struggled to find people to start a band with, he took matters into his own hands and began learning how to create music independently at the age of 16. After spending a while as a bedroom artist, Orrvick made the decision to self-release CLOUDS, an EP written, recorded, produced and mixed entirely on his own. Thus, Kahone Concept was born: a project he named after an instrument he made in woodshop class. The name, Orrvick explains, fits the ethos that surrounds his music: “it’s important to find significance even in the smallest of things; we each find our own significance. It’s what gives us purpose.”

CLOUDS quickly began to gain traction online, with several indie stations picking up the closing track, “Silent Sounds”. Since then, Kahone Concept has grown exponentially in the Pittsburgh music scene: critics have repeatedly noted the individuality of the one-man band’s sound, which blends “dazzling synths with immersive layers of other instruments”. With the release of their sophomore EP, Towers, the band gained further recognition: it was nominated for “Best EP of 2017” by Pittsburgh music magazine Sound Scene Express, and the band was voted “2017 Pittsburgh’s Best Pop/Rock Band” by the Pittsburgh City Paper. Anna & the Sea is the solo project of Anna Lindstrom, once a wild fancy, now her debut EP “Söräng” is out, with all songs written and produced by herself, recorded together with a number of familiar faces from the Swedish music scene. The result is a cinematic and dynamic sound with strong melodies and Anna’s distinct voice.

Originally from a small town in Sweden, Anna moved to Stockholm, getting involved early in the music scene as a singer and background singer in different bands, as a sound engineer, radio show host, music journalist and DJ. Secretly, she has been working on her own material for what feels like since high school, but it never felt like the right place or time to put everything together, until now.

After playing around in a friend’s studio last year, things started to fall into place. Anna returned to the studio with her songs, written on her tired computer, and recorded them together with a number of musicians, amongst them Peter Morén of Peter Bjorn and John, drummer Ola Hultgren (Ane Brun, Veronica Maggio), Nils Berg (Håkan Hellström), Fredrik Hermansson (Ane Brun) playing organ and piano and Hanna Ekströms and Anna Dager on strings.

Elen Never Sleeps, the solo bedroom pop project of Kaji, a resident of Tokyo,
is set to release his first full-length album on June 29th, 2018.

Kaji has been making music under the moniker of Elen Never Sleeps for more than 10 years.
It once was a post-rock band and then, after losing hearing in one ear, he decided to go solo.

Elen Never Sleeps' music is definitely not what you expect from a Japanese act.
His well constructed composition is often described as blissful dream-pop or romantic-tinged chamber pop.

To make “Flowers For Hesse”, a collection of delicately woven vocal-centric art pop songs,
Kaji recorded almost everything by using his voice and electric guitars.
Ambient pads, something flute-ish, strings ensemble, icy synth and even steelpan...
all of these sounds on the album were actually created by guitars with effects pedals.

Kaji says,
“I’m so frustrated with the fact that the western music industry basically expects Japanese music to be bizarre, eccentric and orientalized. Removing their bias is one of the main goals of this project.“

Rainbow Chan - Promises 諾言

Chun Yin Rainbow Chan works across music, performance and installation. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Sydney, Rainbow is interested in mistranslations, diaspora and the effects of globalisation on modern Chinese society. Her research engages with the authentic and the copy, exploring sites of exchange and desire which complicate Western notions of originality and appropriate consumption. Central to Rainbow's work is the circulation of knock-off objects, sounds and images in global media. Her work positions the fake as a complex sign that shapes new myths, values and contemporary commodity production.

Tying together her works across installation and pop music is the relationship between nostalgia, migration and identity. She released her debut record Spacings (Silo Arts & Records) in 2016, which was feature album on FBi Radio, Radio Adelaide, RTRFM, and nominated for SMAC Awards 2016 (Best Live Act, Record of the Year). Under her techno project, Chunyin, Rainbow released Code Switch EP on UK label, Off Out, in 2016.

Her most recent release, FABRICA (Healthy Tapes), further utilises pop hooks, fractured samples and incisive lyrics to interrogate love, power and gender relations. Its lead single, "Let Me" won Best Song of 2017 in FBi Radio's Sydney Music, Arts & Culture Awards.

Rainbow has performed extensively including live appearances at Sydney Opera House, Museum of Contemporary Art, Gallery of Modern Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Old and New Art, and Iceland Airwaves. Her installations have been exhibited with Firstdraft Gallery, Liquid Architecture, 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Longli International New Media Arts Festival, China, and National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

This is an idea central to the music of one-woman-band bittymacbeth, whose debut album Beauty For Ashes, hit #1 three days after its release on iTunes and Apple Music on the Top R&B/Soul charts in Singapore. This success comes after having her two previous singles, Haters Gon’ Hate and Californian Dream, which were produced together with Dru Chen, reach #4 and 3 respectively on the same charts.

Her physical album launch at Esplanade Recital Studio was sold out and the album received critical acclaim in Juice and Bandwagon. Straits Times Music Correspondent, Eddino Abdul Hadi, reviewed the album:, stating that bittymacbeth has “… refined songcraft and impressive chops. The singer, bass player and songwriter might be a new name in the scene, but the list of seasoned collaborators on the release - from The Sam Willows' Benjamin Kheng to Young Artist Award recipient Ruth Ling - shows how much faith the local music fraternity have in this bright young wunderkind.”

In the spirit of her generation’s DIY approach, bittymacbeth, real name Beth Yap, composes, arranges, co-produces all of her own music - jazz sensibilities are balanced with radio-friendly melodies, complemented by funky basslines and a whole lot of soul. The same DIY approach applies to her live solo shows as a one-woman band, where she creates an orchestra of sound using only live-looped bass and vocals.

On July 4, ZOMBIE-CHANG will release her new album, “PETIT PETIT PETIT.”

She recently released the music video for one of the songs on the album, “Mona Lisa.” The video is set in a gym, where ZOMBIE-CHANG is working out. It then turns into a ode to France, with the French flag, as well as models of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre (home of the Mona Lisa). Check it out below!

silhungmo means Little Red Riding Hood in the pronunciation in Chinese, like the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood, silhungmo’s music is passionate, straightforward and full of emotions. These four hotblooded youth keep their faith from the very first day of silhungmo, won a number of awards in many music competitions among all these years.

Apart from being awarded, silhungmo believe that the process of creating music is far more important, therefore after two years of coordination, the first album was released in May 2015, after the album is released, silhungmo’s music was surprisingly being played in radio programs from various countries, their albums were shipped to different cities around the world. In November 2015, silhungmo was invited to be filmed for a MV of their song ‘Lost Soul Fish’ by two Brazilian filmmakers.

In 2017, silhungmo has faced changing of member, Gould Wu became the new drummer. silhungmo believes that when music goes global, language is no longer a wall between different races. Aimed at spreading the positivity to people around the world, silhungmo use their music to comfort the sorrow, despondence, disappointment and worries.

Tatiana Zagorac adopted the moniker Talltale and stepped into the sightline in 2016 with her debut EP "myfriendscallmeTAT."

Working with producer Ari Rhodes (Bryan Finlay, Lexi Strate, Nuela Charles), and influenced by the likes of LIGHTS, Ellie Goulding, and Imogen Heap, Talltale is carving out her own space in the electronic-pop genre. Her distinct voice and quirky songwriting have won her HOT107’s Hot Factor contest, as well as two nominations and an award at the 2016 Edmonton Music Awards.

Her live show, displaying her talent as a vocalist, drummer, and guitarist, has earned her spots opening for Alyssa Reid, Virginia to Vegas, Tyler Shaw, and Trevor Guthrie.

All of this within the first year of her debut release, and Talltale has no plans of slowing down.

Believing that visuals are a crucial part of storytelling, she also shoots and edits all of her own videos.

In her free time, you can catch Talltale gaming, binge-watching anime, and drinking too much coffee.
