Hana Vu - How Many Times Have You Driven By

Hana Vu - How Many Times Have You Driven By

Hana Vu - Crying on the Subway | Audiotree Live

Clamoring for creative outlets from an early age, she formed musical projects and played shows, though without fully clicking with her teen peers in the local D.I.Y. brat-pack. “I wouldn’t call myself a curmudgeon, but I found it hard to be friends with other young people. Instead, I found two or three key homies, then just did my own thing— socially and in my music”— partly explaining the ambition and ambiance of How Many Times Have You Driven By. On "Cool", for instance, Hana drapes a lower-key, soulful melody over beats borrowed from her friend Satchy, who also chimes in for a verse as they tarry with life’s misfortunes. She follows this with "Shallow", in which her calm twists into agitation and a more recognizably rock instrumentation, all played and recorded by Hana in her bedroom. The EP returns to peace with the dreamy "426"— the address of a summer residence in which Hana discovered a sense of place or belonging— though fleetingly, as her friends disbanded at the season’s end. But, c’est la vie. Solitude, for all its occasional pangs, is for Hana Vu as much a condition of her independence, a little breathing room from the throng to forge her own certain future in music. As she’ll tell you, with poise and fairly pleased with things so far,“I spend most of my time alone.”

The Molice - Hello Hello

THE MOLICE - Hello Hello

THE MOLICE "Hello Hello"

The Molice are an alternative/post-hardcore/dance-core trio from Tokyo, formed in 2007 by the charismatic female singer/lyricist/guitarist Rinko and high tension guitarist Yuzuru Takeda. Drummer Hirofumi “Paro” Katsumoto joined in 2015 after a lineup change.

Drawing inspiration from 70’s punk DIY spirit, 80’s new wave stylish power pop, and 90’s unchained indies guitar rock, the band has hammered out their own sound while playing in Tokyo’s numerous rock venues and on tour in North America, Europe and Asia. This East/West hybrid sound has a wide appeal by being both catchy and edgy, incorporating rock n’ roll, classical, dance, shoegaze, alternative, and post-hardcore elements. Rinko sings primarily in Japanese, but in a melodic rock style, in contrast to the more popular idol singing style in Japan. Her lyrics are often romantic, but sometimes venture into sci-fi, inspired by movies such as Blade Runner and Fahrenheit 451.

Since their beginning, the band has had a high percentage of foreigners amongst their fans. As a result, the Molice has received TV and radio coverage in a diverse range of countries such as Vietnam, the USA, France, the UK, Australia, Japan, and Portugal. The Molice’s second album “Catalystrock” also caught the attention of Good Charamel Records (owned by Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls), who released the album in North America.

The Molice, now based in Buffalo, NY, are currently touring the US. Their eighth album ‘Gate’ is set for release on October 12th.

Yuhan Su - City Animals

Yuhan Su - City Animals

In many ways, Yuhan Su represents the voice of the new generation of jazz musicians. Though she is firmly rooted in jazz tradition, her music is innovative, emotional, cerebral and most importantly, always lyrical. Her compositions and improvisations are uniquely hers, marked with an amalgamation of complexity, intensity and emotional resonance. And though she is capable of blistering technique, she always maintains a sense of melodic lyricism and wonder in her playing.

Recent recipient for the 2017 DownBeatCritics Poll in the category “Rising Star” of Vibraphone, New York based Taiwanese vibraphonist Yuhan Su has been living in the US since moving to Boston in 2008 to study at Berklee. Afterwards, she has performed around the world and joined acclaimed saxophonist Greg Osby's label, Inner Circle Music.

Su's debut release as leader, Flying Alone (Inner Circle Music, 2013), has been released to widespread approval. In the April edition of DownBeat, Brad Farberman wrote of Su's "intelligence, sensitivity and a haunting sense of tenderness." Flying Alone has received numerous music awards and nominations, including ‘Best Jazz Album of the Year’, ‘Best New Artist’, ’ Best Jazz Single’ from the 2013 Golden Indie Music Award and ‘Best Performance Album of the year’, ’Best Composer Award’ from 2013 Golden Melody Award in Taiwan, and “Best Release of 2013” by All about Jazz.

In 2015, Yuhan released her second album A Room of One’s Own featuring her jazz quintet. DownBeat described it as “Like the best fiction, it’s entirely enveloping’ (Brian Zimmerman). The album has also won numerous international music awards including ‘Best Jazz Album of the Year’ and ‘Best Instrumentalist Award’ from Golden Indie Music Award.

SASAMI - Not The Time / Callous

SASAMI - Not The Time / Callous

SASAMI (Sasami Ashworth) has been making music in the Los Angeles area, in almost every way you can, for the last decade. From playing French horn in orchestras and studios and playing keys, bass, and guitar in local rock bands (Dirt Dress, Cherry Glazerr), to contributing vocals/string/horn arrangements to studio albums (Vagabon, Curtis Harding, Wild Nothing, Hand Habits, etc.) and producing on tracks for other respected artists (Soko), she has gained a reputation as an all-around musical badass.
After graduating from the Eastman School of Music in 2012, SASAMI spent her time scoring and making orchestral arrangements for films, commercials and studio albums, as well as being a deeply committed music teacher in Los Angeles. She spent the previous two and a half years touring the world non-stop playing synths in the band Cherry Glazerr and is now taking a turn to focus on her own music. SASAMI's first ever self-released single "Callous" was given Pitchfork's "Best New Track," and this year she has already shared bills with the likes of Japanese Breakfast, Liz Phair, The Breeders, and Blondie

Brenda Xu - Overflow

Brenda Xu - Overflow

Brenda Xu - Overflow MV

Overflow is Brenda Xu's newest album and builds on the unique sonic landscape that she created on her last album with more complex song structures and musical arrangements.
“The thread that runs through all the songs is an overflow of emotion that we feel from daily life — from the drudgery of simple routines to the more intense moments that challenge our willpower and sanity,” said Xu. “It gets to be too much sometimes and we need a release. But along with longing and desperation, there is also a strength and power which resonates through these intense emotions. I hope that the album takes the listener on an emotional journey, with many glimpses of hope along the way."
Xu, whose last album was described as “beautiful music that can calm the most savage beast” (Frontloader), has been building a steady following since her arrival on the Seattle music scene a few years ago. The momentum she created with the release of her last album, “For the Winter," in 2014 has led to two successful western U.S. tours and a feature in the MTV show “Awkward.” Her new album, "Overflow" was just added to KEXP's rotation, and has been receiving airplay in countries all over the world. Compared to artists such as Daughter, Cat Power, and Aimee Mann, her sound has been described as “treading the delicate line between washed-out ambient tones and carefully crafted acoustic arrangements.”

Brenda Xu’s music has been described as “treading the delicate line between washed-out ambient tones and carefully crafted acoustic arrangements.” Her blend of folk, orchestral, and ambient elements are reminiscent of Bon Iver and Cat Power, but has a distinctive voice which emerged on her last album, “For The Winter.” Since its release in 2014, the album has led to several cross-continental tours in the U.S. & Europe, as well as song placements on MTV & Nickelodeon. Her new album, “Overflow” was added to tastemaker radio station, KEXP‘s rotation, and has been receiving airplay and press coverage in countries all over the world. She has opened shows this year for Lisa Loeb and Josh Rouse, and will be supporting Joan Osborne in upcoming shows next year.

THE WAiiT - Won't You Wait

THE WAiiT - Won't You Wait

THE WAiiT is a Taiwan neo-psychedelic rock band founded by Frey and Lili in 2016. The group began as a home recording project. Frey writes, records, produces the music. Lili provides insight and inspiration, artwork and makes music videos. As a touring act, the project consists of Frey (guitar, vocals), Lili (bass, vocals), Sherry (drums).

The band was initially formed as a home studio project in 2016. Frey and Lili had worked together for years before these projects. In November 2015, the duo just finished their previous band Oscilloscope who formed in 2014 and played hard rock music. “I want to create a new style of rock music. It should be vintage and tastes like grunge” Lili said. Frey started to listen to the music which Lili suggested, and then wrote songs based on grunge, psychedelic rock.
After six months, the duo uploaded six self-produced tracks to thesixtyone, Sound Cloud and StreetVoice which caught attentions of musicians. At the same time, they enlisted drummer Xavi and started rehearsing as a band. In December 2016, they began playing at some local gigs.

Grease in the Grass
Frey completed the album tracks in October 2016. “As those great bands do, we need a name which is simple but meaningful” Lili said. The duo listed their favorite artists like Nirvana, The Drums, Joy Division and the band was finally named THE WAiiT.
“We love Kurt’s spirit. The word nirvana means people who are waiting to go to the new world” Frey said. “Neither of us like waiting” Lili added. Their self-produced debut album, THE WAiiT, which was released on 11 March 2017.
Tours in 2017 included Hsinchu Not Bad Festival, Taoyuan Ironrose Festival, as well as Spring Scream festival, Winder Music Festival, Hohaiyan Rock Festival and Unlimited Freedom Festival.

Night Out
During Unlimited Freedom Festival, tensions ran high and Lili criticized Xavi's drumming, which she felt was not "in the pocket." Xavi was fired afterwards and replaced by Sherry.
Tour in 2018 included Urban Nomad Opening Freak Out Festival and The Next Big Thing. During Nomad Opening Freak Out Festival, the Treasure music video was nominated for one of the best music videos of Taiwan Music Video Competition. On 7 July, THE WAiiT was invited to the UFORADIO for StreetVoiceonair show.

Music Style
THE WAiiT’s music is influenced by 60’s psychedelic rock, 80’s post punk and 90’s grunge. Frey uses funky and powerful rhythm, as well as arranges exotic melodies and harmonies between vocal, guitar and bass to make people dance. It depends on his experience of playing or listening to the world music like flamenco, samba, tango, military tattoo, etc.
The duo like playing some noises or effects in their songs that make tricks or grunge sounds. “In recent years, the guitar rock has become less and less attractive. It seems that Synthesizer will replace the role of guitar of the band. If there were no guitar’s noise, there would be no rock’n roll” Frey said.
THE WAiiT has two lead vocals. Frey usually sings the songs which have dark, melancholy and strong emotion and Lili sings songs which are negative and aggressive.

Frigga - Fiercely Fearless

Frigga - Fiercely Fearless

Frigga - Fiercely Fearless MV

Frigga's music is a celebration of life and restoration. Her latest album, due to be released in March 2019, was written in Brooklyn NYC in her home studio - which Frigga (FKA Sasha Siem) lovingly describes as her cocoon - and completed in the UK with producer, Danton Supple. Using sacred objects - (crystals, runes and healing tuning forks etc.) - to create unique percussion sounds and beats with an organic origin. The album also marks Frigga’s return to her Cello. Recorded at 432 hertz - otherwise known as ‘the love frequency’ - the vibrations and sounds of the record restore balance and have a medicinal effect on the body.

Sarah Nixey - Night Walks Album · 2018

Sarah Nixey - Night Walks Album · 2018

Sarah Nixey made her sudden, necessary show business entrance as one third of the darkly glamorous pop group Black Box Recorder. She was in the severe, dreamy centre, singing scheming songs that were deadly serious about trivia, and deeply frivolous about important matters. She sang the songs as if they were bruised lullabies, as if she was soothing the 20th Century to sleep. Once asleep, its dreams would become the 21st Century.
Sarah is now, in the 21st Century, solo... Her flash, exotically electric songs are like manifestos proclaiming that she’s as committed to the idea of pop as a far out fantasy, as hallucinated pleasure, as she had been in Black Box Recorder, but this time the surreal edge, the emotional pressure, the deviant intensity, is all her own. She is now 21st Century solo.
She sings smart, stinging pop songs. They tell heady, half-crazed stories about minds and bodies, memories and illusions, desperation and passion.
Sarah sings, talks, whispers and sighs moody, mesmerising nightlife city centre songs and tender beat ballads about things she has remembered and things she will one day remember.
Sarah has a still, certain and dangerously captivating voice that could sing torch songs in the 50s, Bond songs in the 60s, underground disco in the New York 70s, New Pop in the 80s and avant Britpop in the 90s. She now, solo in the 21st Century, sings perfect street light lit electro-beat pop that has an avenging kick in the tale and a killer thrill in the sound. She is the kind of singer that could, in pop heaven, duet with Leonard Cohen, Tim Buckley, Kraftwerk or David Bowie, but for now, Nixey's on her own, checking her diary, double checking her thoughts, finding her own way round the mysterious streets that take you from inside your mind to inside the disco. And, once the night is over and the light takes over, beyond. by Paul Morley.

“Marked by Perley’s sultry, twangy vocals and guitarist Chris Connor’s electric-fuzz wizardry, the Howlin’ Moons create an enduring classic-rock sound that is appropriately road-weary, far from trendy, and still building steam.” -Kyle Harris, Westword
Formed in Columbus, Ohio, in 2009, Angela Perley & The Howlin’ Moons radiate with electric guitars, swooning vocals, and songs that split the difference between rock & roll, americana, and dreamy psychedelia. The midwestern four-piece comprised of Angela Perley (vocals, electric guitar and sometimes musical saw), Chris Connor (lead guitar), Billy Zehnal (bass) and a rotating team of drummers for live shows, have released five EPs and two full length albums. Performing over 120 shows a year, the band has built a slow and steady grass-roots following.
The band is currently working on their third studio album and released a live in-studio EP of songs, Stereogram Sessions, July 27th of 2018. Stereogram Sessions features extended and alternate versions of previously recorded songs.

Destroy Boys - Soundproof

Destroy Boys - Soundproof

Oakland based garage rock sweethearts Destroy Boys are showing expansion and demanding reaction on their latest newest EP, "Crybaby/Vixen". The female founded and fronted hi-fi rock band has grown since crossing the radar of music fans after a mention in the pages of Rolling Stone. After releasing their first album, band members Alexia Roditis and Vi Mayugba were then introduced to rock fans worldwide. Their new EP is a departure from the angsty relationship driven anthems of their debut album "Sorry, Mom" and a look into the inner thoughts of this generation’s riot girls. Since inking their deal with Uncool Records in 2016, Destroy Boys has been rocking stages and festivals throughout the country including an invitation to House of Vans at 2017’s SXSW.
Destroy Boys' new EP “Crybaby/Vixen" showcases the duo’s growth as songwriters and musicians with Mayugba’s driving sonic guitar creating a raw, gritty canvas for Roditis’ ethereal, haunting, and sometimes comical vocals. A raucously introspective road trip to early adulthood, with the feeling of a cross between Blondie and Tragic Kingdom-era No Doubt. Destroy Boys are the perfect soundtrack for slaying the patriarchy or going skating with your friends.

Tsushimamire is an alt-legendary Japanese all-girl band formed in 1999, featuring Mari (guitar, lead vocals), Yayoi (bass, background vocals), and recent addition Maiko (drums, background vocals), who has admirably stepped in to take the place of original band drummer Mizue. This is a fascinating and creative group which has mesmerized audiences around the world for years with its versatility (ranging from hard, thrashing punk sounds to interesting and innovative rock/art numbers). Mari's underground songwriting is brilliant, touching on subjects of social convention, rebellion, love, anxiety, and the power of the imagination, while her vocals excel in expressiveness, ranging from child-like innocence, to cries of despair. Yayoi keeps a wicked beat, and moves with the grace of a dancer/warrior/superhero, contributing to a live show that is simultaneously theatrical and earnest: certain to delight alt-rock fans and lovers of the Japanese underground wherever they may be found!
Over a period of 18 years, Tsushimamire has released 13 albums and given about 1800 shows all over the world. They have an inventory of approximately 150 original songs, featuring a wide variety of themes and styles. Their music has sometimes been used by TV shows, movies, and games.
