Leah Dou - River Run
River Run beckons the viewer to return from their virtual life and back to reality. The dreamy imagery and looping musicality calls to mind the natural world — phases of the moon, tides of the ocean. Modern urban living has its own (analogous) forces. Taxis cascade through the streets as water along a river bank; people move about in organized patterns with a trance-like instinct. Do the structures built around us impose this almost poetic order, or do we fit these structures to the rhythms of our world? River Run attempts to superimpose the circuitous, flowing quality of the natural world onto a depiction of young, urban life.
This music video was shot entirely on 16mm motion picture film; an organic, chemical process in stark contrast to the plastic digital mediums that illuminate our faces and record our experiences. In many ways, this was a film that was made by hand. Many of the scenes in the film were developed by hand, by the Director, in an artist run film lab, Negativland, in Brooklyn, New York. These images have been brought to life through silver — the essential element in film that produces the latent image, and have been cleansed by water — a filmic process more grounded and true than our modern cloud. - Simon Liu, Director
