Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Mattiel Brown crafts sunbaked rock & roll that harks back to the brazen sound of the early 2000s, preferring direct lyrics and melodic hooks over drawn-out compositions. Brown's music has modern production values but feels a touch retro, with a dash of country music and a rough-around-the-edges vibe similar to early White Stripes. Her 2017 eponymous debut helped capture that spirit by recording it live in the studio, reflecting the energy from the musicians in the room, while the 2018 follow-up, the six-song Customer Copy, reaffirmed her gift for creating strong and lively '60s-influenced pop/rock.
Brown spent much of her early life growing up on a farm in Georgia, where she would learn how to play guitar and ride horses, among other daily tasks that come with farm life. Eventually she moved to Atlanta, where she got a job working for Mailchimp as a designer and illustrator. Soon after, Brown met Randy Michael and Jonah Swilley, and bonded with them over their taste in music. Eventually she sent them some demos; they were impressed by her voice and asked her to perform live with their band Black Linen. Michael and Swilley were also the co-owners of a songwriting and production team named InCrowd, and when Brown put forward the idea of fronting her own musical act they were keen to help. By 2017, their rough concepts had turned into fully fledged songs, leading to nine months of recording with a full in-house band. InCrowd also had connections with Burger Records, whose execs were impressed by Mattiel's sound, and signed her for the release of her eponymous debut in late 2017. Heavenly Recording struck a deal to release the album in the U.K. and Europe, where it arrived in July 2018. Mattiel toured in support of the release, including a handful of dates opening for Portugal. The Man and appearances at several major European festivals. In August 2018, Mattiel returned to the studio with Michael and Swilley to record a set of fresh songs. The result was a six-song EP, Customer Copy, released in December 2018. ~ Liam Martin, Rovi
