Tokyo indie-pop quartet return with a popcorn double feature in the form of a Horror portmanteau ‘Hazy Horror Party’released on Oct 31 (Oct 21 digital) by Damnably on Eco-Mix Vinyl & Digital.
‘Hazy Horror Party’ features six original songs, sung in English and Japanese and two comedy ‘skits’ in Japanese and follows 2021’s sophomore ‘Strange World’ & 2019 debut ‘Tour De Tokyo’.
Why write Hazy Horror Party album?
Jun: “I like horror songs and movies, and I made the concept of Sound Track to a fictional horror movie. After we made “Vampire” (song on the 2nd album Strange World), it made me want to do a horror record. We aimed to create a Horror and Fun album like Hans Conried & Alice Pearce's “Monster Rally” (monster themed album)that even children can enjoy.”
In their own words
Bloody Night “I wanted to make a duet song like the theme song of the Phantom of the Opera. The theme of the lyrics is Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The chorus unfolded in a gram-rock fashion.”
Zombilly Rave “The rhythm reminds me of the first rockabilly in Hazy. a big fan of George A Romero's zombie movies. The theme of the lyrics is a song that a girl sings to a zombie in the garage.”
Monster Party “The theme of the lyrics is based on the image of Power Puff Girls' Boogie Man’s (Disco loving nightmare monster)party. The song homage the development of the Cheap Trick Dream Police I wanted to include many of my favorite monsters in the lyrics.”
Help me!Hitchcock “The lyrics were inspired by Dutch band The Hammer's “Hitchcock's Lullaby”.”
The Dracula Bop “I wanted to create a Horror Rock like Screamimg Lord Sutch. A song about the strange love between Dracula and Death.”
Hazy Halloween “I wrote this song after being taught by George Damnably Records about Bobby Pickett's Monster Mash. The lyrics are about the best zombie and monster parties.”
In Strange World the band successfully converted the fear, loneliness and disappointment of a new band watching their youth and dreams ebb away into a collection of imaginative, upbeat, spontaneous catchy songs that both expands their range and refines their writing/playing chops into a fun hope-filled transformative work and Hazy Horror Party sees them relax and let their imaginations run wild and party. (Disclaimer -Damnably owns a 7ft animatronic Werewolf and our monster claw logo was drawn by Aaron of American Werewolf Acadmey - so we’re horror aficionados)
The last tracks on both side are spooky themed comedy skits!
