Mimik Banka - Mimik Banka
It has been 2 years since the band name Mimik Banka came to be. Before that it was called 16 Minutes and the music was more on the emo-rock side. In 2015 and 2016 16 Minutes released the album, "Erlkönig" and EP "Ping Pong". Sindy, Tongtong and Robin have been making music together since 2014. During this time they have experienced many high and low points for the band as well as great shows and a few less than great shows. This year a new full length self titled album will be released on December 6th.
From the masked girl standing in the forest on the cover of "Erlkönig", to a curious eye on "Ping Pong", the trio now has a vibrant and abstract piece of cover art for the new album. Each cover matches the musical progression of each release. They want to use this new album to give listeners a clear view of their "musical image" and the dimensions they touch upon right now. In this new album, sparks were flying as the three collided their musical ideas and influence, at the same time they also cooperated with the poets Wei KunJie and Li in the lyrics department in order to best present the mood of the songs.
Since the very beginning Mimik Banka decided not to be caught up in the existing "styles". They are a band that is constantly exploring their boundaries. Most of their music is based on Indie Rock with elements from electronic music, Dream Pop, and Trip-hop, and even hints of jazz and classical. They have always had a clean sound with smooth timbres and a sense of rhythm that flows like water.
Despite these contrasting influences, stylistic conflicts have never affected the band’s approach to establish Mimik Banka’s sonic fingerprint.
The new album “Mimik Banka'' focuses on stories of people in cities. It’s about their dilemmas, longing and love. Some stories are from others, some are their own. Mimik Banka’s listeners like to describe the band’s music with the label “surreal post-impressionism”. In fact, Mimik Banka has been writing music based on reality from the cities they live in and the people around them, Beijing, Düsseldorf, Taipei, Urumqi. Instead of direct observation, they choose to write music with a finer outline, creating an atmosphere with a unique harmonic vocabulary that allows the listeners to truly sink into the mind of the characters that are described in the lyrics and melodies. Their music provokes an image of cities and people that are shrouded in grotesque mists. You can vent, let your mind fly or simply let your thoughts wander in such a fog.
'Mimik' means facial expression and 'Banka' means bank. Mimik Banka is a place where one can deposit and withdraw emotions. A place to enjoy the unusual power of taking control of how you feel.
